Hope, Victory and Liberation: A Collection of Testimonies

This section presents five documents, mainly from the Yad Vashem Archives, pertaining to the period of the eve of liberation: the August 1945 public announcement of the American army, “You Must Know!”; excerpts from the diary of Felicja Szeftler (Bannet) on her last month of internment in and the liberation of the HASAG-Leipzig camp; the Bergen-Belsen diary of Aliza Besser; an excerpt from testimony by Australian nurse, Muriel Doherty, who served as Chief Nurse and Principal Matron at the Bergen Belsen Displaced Persons Camp, on the site of the Bergen Belsen concentration camp, following its liberation,; the testimony of Shraga Knobler, a former prisoner of Mauthausen; and an excerpt from the memoirs of Yevsey Vainrub (from his book of memoirs published in Moscow in 1994), a former Soviet Jewish officer, on his meeting with a group of Jews liberated from Nazi camps in eastern Germany in June 1945.
