Victory and Liberation: A Collection of Testimonies
This
section presents five documents, mainly from the Yad Vashem
Archives, pertaining to the period of the eve of liberation: the
August 1945 public announcement of the American army, “You Must
Know!”; excerpts from the diary of Felicja Szeftler (Bannet) on
her last month of internment in and the liberation of the
HASAG-Leipzig camp; the Bergen-Belsen diary of Aliza Besser; an
excerpt from testimony by Australian nurse, Muriel Doherty, who
served as Chief Nurse and Principal Matron at the Bergen Belsen
Displaced Persons Camp, on the site of the Bergen Belsen
concentration camp, following its liberation,; the testimony of Shraga Knobler, a former prisoner of Mauthausen; and an excerpt from
the memoirs of Yevsey Vainrub (from his book of memoirs published in
Moscow in 1994), a former Soviet Jewish officer, on his meeting with
a group of Jews liberated from Nazi camps in eastern Germany in June
1945.
