Duro Schwarz

The Jasenovač Death Camps

This is the testimony of a Jewish Holocaust survivor from Yugoslavia who was arrested in 1941 in Zagreb and imprisoned in the Jasenovač concentration camp between August 1941-April 1942. He was released thanks to his mixed marriage. He died ca. 1986 in Yugoslavia. The testimony was written in 1945. After the death of his wife in 1994 the manuscript was turned over to the National Commission for the Verification of the Crimes of the Occupier and Its Accomplices. Schwarz describes the horrifying reality of the camp in the first year of the Ustaša regime in Croatia. The Ustaša, who manned the camp staff, forced the Serb, Jewish, and Catholic prisoners to do slave labor while constantly murdering them or starving them to death.
