"The Jews Are Still with Them" Jan Tomasz Gross Reflects on Jedwabne

Recently, Yad Vashem hosted an evening symposium marking the Hebrew publication of Jan Tomasz Gross’s book, Neighbors. The book tells the story of the murder of the Jewish community of Jedwabne by their Polish neighbors on July 10, 1941 and of the murders of the Jews in the nearby towns of Radziłów and Wąsosz a few days earlier. A storm of controversy has erupted in Poland since the book’s publication, and a Polish investigative commission has so far found only evidence to confirm the essence of the story that Gross has told. Shortly before the symposium, Gross was interviewed by David Silberklang, editor of Yad Vashem Studies, the most recent volume of which (30) features five articles on the subject. Gross related to his book, the controversy that it has engendered, his own background, sources, and his optimistic view of the future.
