Shlomo Zalman Unsdorfer: With God Through the Holocaust
Shlomo Zalman Unsdorfer’s Lips of
Shlomo is one of the few religious texts written within the Nazi
sphere of influence that have survived. With the tragic events ever
before him, he responded on several levels. He detected God's
presence in the events and explicated it; he was overcome by the
suffering of the pious and thrust into silence; he leaped to God in
trust and faith and apprehended the underlying metaphysical dynamic
of the universe that descent implied ascent; and he devoted himself
to prayer in anticipation of redemption. While the various strains
remained unreconciled, together
they provided a religious stability that enabled him to endure the
tragedies and helped him to console his congregants. |
