Overview
An
integral part of the general archive, the photo archive specializes
in the collection, storage and research of film and photographic
material. Apart from the traditional methods used to accomplish the
above-mentioned tasks, state of the art information technology is
being used. Most of the
photos were scanned and integrated in a new database, which is
updated regularly. A
computerized search system is available on the premises for all the
items in our collection.
Collections
Approximately
130,000 photos are stored in the main historical collection. They were received from different sources: private
collections, organizations, archives etc.
New photos are added to our collection at an average of 4000
per year.
Approximately
fifteen per cent of these photos can be found in albums; many of
them are rare original items.
More
then 3300 video titles form the backbone of our films collection. There are also 240 films in original roll format, but all of
them are also available in video format.
It should be mentioned that most of our films are not
originals, but copies that were purchased from different sources.
The
public is encouraged to send us original Holocaust related film and
photo material in their possession!
We accept both originals and good quality copies.
Services
The
services of the film and photo department are integrated in the
general public services division of the archives.
Most of the collection is available to the public for viewing
and copying/reproducing purposes.
On-line search system is available within the general reading
room of the archives. The majority of the photo collection is
viewable on-line in this search system.
As
was already mentioned, most of our films are not originals,
therefore their use by the public is restricted by international
copyright regulations.
The
staff of the department also offers consultation and advisory
services regarding specific questions or issues.
