Director-General of
UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization) Koichiro Matsuura recently visited Yad Vashem.
During the course of his visit,
Director-General Matsuura visited the Holocaust History Museum and
Children’s Memorial, and participated in a wreath laying ceremony
in the Hall of Remembrance. Signing the Visitors’ Book upon
exiting the Children’s Memorial, Director General Matsuura wrote:
“I am very moved by everything that I
have seen here at the Yad Vashem. The whole thing vividly
represents a tragic history which the humanity should never repeat
in any part of the world.”
During his visit, Director-General
Matsuura discussed with Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate
Avner Shalev ways to further cooperate with Yad Vashem,
particularly in the field of education, especially
teacher-training.
Recently, Yad
Vashem cooperated with UNICEF on events marking International
Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27. The first
International Youth Congress at Yad Vashem’s International
School for Holocaust Studies (January 27-29) took place under the
patronage of UNESCO, and UNESCO’s commemoration event in Paris
took place with Yad Vashem’s cooperation. A special Yad Vashem
exhibit, “Auschwitz: The Depth of the Abyss”, opened in the UNESCO
building in Paris to mark the day.
