Enlargement of a section of an aerial photograph taken on August 25th,
1944 by a Mosquito plane from the South African Air force’s 60 Photo
Recon Squadron (Sortie no. 60PR/694). We can see many details from the
area of gas chambers II and III, and the railway platform. We can
clearly see the roofs of the gas chambers, the crematoria above them,
a train by the platform and groups of prisoners on their way to the
gas chambers. Note the open gate at the entrance to gas chamber II and
the cultivated garden in the courtyard. On the top right is the
sewage plant which appears in
photograph 358
in the album documenting the camp’s
construction.
