Toys Belonging to Vera Baderova

When the Bader family was deported from Kyjov to Theresienstadt, they had to walk a distance of a few kilometers from the train station to the ghetto. Each member of the family was carrying a number of household items, except for 10 year old Vera who was carrying only her beloved doll Ivanka. Annoyed that his sister wasn’t carrying more items, Jerzy grabbed the doll out of Vera’s arms and flung her to the side of the road. Miraculously, the German guard who accompanied the family allowed Vera to retrieve her doll. As a result of being thrown, the doll’s head was damaged (see picture above). Along with her beloved doll, Vera safeguarded toys left to her by friends who were deported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz (see below). She recently  donated these precious items to  Yad Vashem's Historical Museum.
