Allied soldiers guard the cells of the accused during the trial – Nuremberg, Germany, 1945/6

 

Despite the tight round-the-clock guard on the prisoners, Hermann Göring, Commander of the German Air Force and one of the heads of the Nazi regime, committed suicide by swallowing poison in his cell before his death sentence could be carried out. One of the American guards, whose trust was won by Göring, unwittingly smuggled a tiny cyanide pill into Göring’s cell.
