Allied soldiers guard
the cells of the accused during the trial – Nuremberg, Germany,
1945/6
Despite the
tight round-the-clock guard on the prisoners,
Hermann Göring, Commander of the German Air Force and one of the
heads of the Nazi regime, committed suicide by swallowing poison in
his cell before his death sentence could be carried out. One of the
American guards, whose trust was won by Göring, unwittingly smuggled
a tiny cyanide pill into Göring’s cell. |
