Photograph from the evacuation of the
Warsaw Ghetto, used as evidence during the Nuremberg Trials,
1945/6
The Jews in the
photograph were taken out from a bunker after the suppression of the
Warsaw Ghetto Revolt in May 1943. The photograph was taken by the
personal photographer of
General Jϋrgen Stroop, who commanded the
suppression of the Warsaw Ghetto Revolt and its destruction. This
photograph, and other photographs from the destruction of the ghetto
were found in Stroop’s house by the American forces after the war,
and became central pieces of evidence in the Nuremberg trials. After
the trial, the photograph became a symbol of German brutality
against the civilian population in general, and the Jews in
particular. |
